Michael Anderson

Bio:Mr. Anderson brings over 20 years of disk storage development experience, and as CTO, he leads the engineering team at Huge. He holds several patents in the area of disk storage, and is responsible for industry firsts including the first commercial RAID5 system, the first AV optimized disk drives, and the first commercially available video Server.

 

Richard Andrews

President, Technicolor Creative Services

 
Bio: Mr. Andrews has over 24 years of experience in the television production and post-production industries. He began his career with Vidfilm in 1978, joining the company as a videotape operator and eventually moved-up through the ranks to the position of President & Chief Executive Officer. After Vidfilm International Digital’s acquisition by Technicolor in February 2002, Mr. Andrews assumed the position of President, Distribution Services within Technicolor Creative Services (TCS). Mr. Andrews’ current day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing TCS worldwide post-production operations.  

 

Steve Canepa

Bio: As Vice President Marketing and Strategy, Global Media and Entertainment Industry, Mr. Canepa is responsible for IBM's strategy, market-share, business attainment, industry solutions and product offerings for Entertainment, Sports, Broadcast, Cable, Publishing and Advertising customers worldwide. In addition to his management responsibilities, Mr. Canepa has participated in the structuring and negotiation of numerous consulting, services, product and partner agreements; leading the development of IBM's Global Media and Entertainment solutions business from startup to a profitable worldwide organization with over 250 members. In addition, he has developed the business strategy and plan for two Interactive WWW joint ventures and is a regular speaker at industry events, including keynote addresses at NAB and Broadcast Asia.

 

Ernie Cicogna

Bio: Ernie has 30 years of experience in the information technology industry. He has worked on both the sales and financial sides of the technology business for companies such as IBM, where he spent more than 25 years, and for multiple software start-up companies in Silicon Valley .  He joined NXN Software in January of 2003.

 

John Coghill
Director General Manager, Digital Cinema, DALSA

 
Bio:Mr. Coghill has over 20 years experience in technology based companies, the first 10 in various design engineering and management roles and the past 10 in various marketing and business development capacities. Mr. Coghill joined DALSA in 1994 as a technical program manager, moved into a new role created to oversee the sales and marketing activities related to the company’s Application Specific Contracts group and then on to the Corporate Business Development Manager role. During his tenure in this position he was largely responsible for the process that resulted in the restructuring of the company during the fall of 2000 and the creation of the DALSA Digital Cinema strategic business unit. During this period Mr. Coghill also earned his MBA degree from the top business school in Canada , Queen’s University at Kingston .

Given the nascent state of the business unit for the past two years, as the General Manager of the Digital Cinema division he has been primarily responsible for directing the R&D team working on the development of the Origin digital cinematography camera recently demonstrated at NAB in April. He is also responsible for the development of strategic and business development plans for the division, now his primary focus. The positive response received at NAB has encouraged DALSA to add significantly to the resources dedicated to this business unit, including a level of R&D management that will allow Mr. Coghill to focus exclusively on the business and relationship development activities required to build a name for a newcomer to the industry such as DALSA.

 

Terry Cullen

Randall Dark

Bio: An undisputed pioneer in the HDTV industry, Randall Paris Dark is the creative and marketing force behind HD Vision Studios. His 17 years of work exclusively in the High Definition Television medium have distin-guished him as both an artistic and tech-nological visionary. As a writer, director, and producer with over 450 HDTV productions to his credit, Dark is able to offer an artist's point of view while demonstrating the technological advantages of High Definition. Recognized globally as an enthusiastic speaker who tells it like it is, Randall has spoken about High Definition Television to audiences at events such as: the Tokyo International Film Festival, the National Association of Broad-caster's Convention, the International Electronic Cinema Festival, CES, World Television Forum and NATPE. On May 19, 2000 , Randall was presented with one of the International Electronic Cinema Festival's top honors: The Pioneer Award. This honor was bestowed upon Randall for his extraordinary contributions to the success of HDTV. Dark was also honored for his efforts by Baylor University , which instated him as an Honorary Alumnus in 1999. In addition to his experience in High Definition, Randall is a theatrical director/producer and published playwright.

 

Scott Dinsdale

Bio:Scott Dinsdale is EVP, Digital Strategy for the Motion Picture Association of America where he is responsible for representing the interests of the audio-visual entertainment industry in the digital age. Prior to the MPAA, Dinsdale was SVP, CTO & CIO for BMG Entertainment, the entertainment division of Bertelsmann and prior was VP, Applied Technology at Merrill Lynch & Co. His background includes various executive roles at developing ventures including President and Founder of Data Broadcasting Corporation, now a division of Pearson plc. Dinsdale sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of InformationWeek magazine; the Advisory Board of Polytechnic University; is a General Partner of Phocas Partners; Founder and Dean of Stanford University’s “IT Executive Boot Camp”; a Founding Board Member of the International Informatics Society ; and a principal of Taylor-Dinsdale LLC, a marketing and technology consulting organization.

 

Mark Drop

Bio: Mark Drop graduated from Ohio University in Athens ('83) with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. Degree in hand he moved immediately to New York where he pretended to focus on a career in advertising while actually playing in various loud rock bands, performing improve and writing plays, songs, screenplays and a humor book ( The Hamper & Trivet Catalog ; Simon & Schuster, 1985). He moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to write jokes for The Arsenio Hall Show and went on to write for various live-action sitcoms, including Dinosaurs (ABC/Disney), Something Wilder (WB), Goode Behavior (UPN/Paramount) and The Clinic (Comedy Central).

 

Volker Engel

Bio:Volker Engel co-founded Uncharted Territory in 1999 with company President Marc Weigert to combine their expertise in advanced production technology to create major motion pictures for the global audience. An Academy Award recipient for Best Visual Effects for 20 th Century Fox’s Independence Day , Volker’s visual effects mastery positions him in the industry as a filmmaker with a unique approach to telling big screen stories on independent budgets. The team has collaborated on their first feature, Coronado , as writers, producers and VFX supervisors working with first-time writer and director Claudio Faeh. Prior to forming Uncharted Territory, Volker worked on director Roland Emmerich’s 1998 version of Godzilla (TriStar, Independent Pictures) as the film’s Visual Effects Supervisor, leading a team of 500 visual effects specialists. In 1995, Volker, worked as Visual Effects Supervisor, together with Doug Smith, on Independence Day delivering over 400 effect shots and overseeing a crew of 325 effect specialists. When he was only twenty-three years old, Volker first worked with Emmerich in Germany as Visual Effects Supervisor on Moon 44 , the director’s last feature before he came to the U.S. Volker supervised the model effects on Emmerich’s Universal Soldier in 1990, their first U.S. project together.  

 

Pete Fasciano

Bio: Pete Fasciano is Corporate Fellow, Advance Development for Avid Technology, and a co-founder of the company.  Pete worked with Avid founder Bill Warner to launch Avid in 1987-88 and developed the now familiar nonlinear editing interface for Avid's first product, the Media Composer.  Today Avid is the worldwide leader in digital nonlinear editing, effects and audio systems.  Pete is currently engaged in long-term advance product planning and development, and can speak to the full line of Avid products.  Prior to joining Avid, Pete was Founder/CEO of Vizwiz, a Boston film/video production and editing facility, and later CEO of Imagenda, an advertising & media design firm.

 

Ron Frankel

Bio: With a degree in philosophy and a masters in architecture from MIT, Ron Frankel lives in Los Angeles designing complex production sequences for film and television. Through typically unusual circumstances he began his career in New York as an illustrator/graphic designer for interactive cd-rom games. While in New York he joined forces with Pixel Liberation Front to help expand their feature film business and ultimately became the PLF Creative Director, co-founding their Los Angeles office. Encouraged by the success of previs on projects such as Starship Troopers , Fight Club , Panic Room and Minority Report and the promise of further exploration into the technical/artistic design process of feature film production, Ron recently founded Proof, through which he will continue to push the state of the art of previsualization. Proof is currently responsible for previs on Cat In The Hat .

 

Kevin Hause

Bio: Kevin is responsible for conducting analysis on digital media markets and technologies, leading North American business development and marketing, as well as managing operations within the region. Widely noted as an expert in digital media, with a focus on interactive TV, wireless, and home entertainment. Kevin has been featured at numerous conferences and has been quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Investor's Business Daily, and Time Magazine. Prior to joining Screen Digest, Kevin was Worldwide Director, Strategy & Corporate Development for NBC, where he guided NBC’s strategy for emerging technologies. Bio: Jon Healey is a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, where he covers the digital living room. A 22-year veteran of the news business, he joined the Times in October 2000 after three years as a telecom and multimedia reporter for the San Jose Mercury News. Bio:An industry expert with more than fifteen years of digital imaging experience, Carl is responsible for the development and integration of emerging digital technologies into the technical infrastructure of HBO.  Some of Carl’s recent projects include the design and implementation of the HBO Digital Library system, which is an enterprise-level digital asset management solution for digital photo, video, and audio assets.  Carl is also responsible for the HBO Intranet environment, interactive web/TV development, as well as the HBO web content management initiative.

Ramy Katrib

Bio: After finishing film school, Ramy Katrib began working in the post industry as a telecine colorist. He started using Final Cut Pro (FCP) in 1999 on two feature length documentaries he was producing. Dan Krech

Bio:  Since founding 3D animation, visual effects and compositing house DKP EFFECTS in 1985, Dan Krech has produced nearly 3000 award-winning commercials and dozens of feature film, television and direct-to-video/DVD projects for leading studios. Krech and DKP EFFECTS are the inventors of DVD n , a hybrid movie/game direct-to-DVD platform, with Warner/Rhino Home Video releasing the first DVD n title “Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons and Dragons Adventure”. DKP EFFECTS produced the pilot for the first-ever prime time CG animated series “Game Over” for UPN and Carsey-Werner-Mandabach. Dan Krech’s DKP EFFECTS has produced groundbreaking animation and visual effects for such recent films as “X-Men” (Fox), “The Siege” (Fox), “Joseph: King of Dreams” (Dreamworks), “Space Station” (IMAX) and “The Nuttiest Nutcracker” (Columbia Tri-Star).

 

Bernie Laramie

Bio: Bernie Laramie has been a Producer in Los Angeles , CA for more than 25 years. He is best known for his recent work as a Producer on CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (PGA Kodak Vision Award; Golden Globe Nomination for Best Dramatic Series, etc.) as well as work on such series as “Profiler” and Dark Skies” for NBC, (Emmy for Best Main Title Picture, Emmy Nomination for Best Main Title Music; ITV Monitor Award for Visual Effects) “The Invaders” for Fox Television, “War on the Worlds” for UPN, and “Max Headroom” for ABC (Emmy for Sound). Bernie is currently producer on “Theat Matrix” for the upcoming fall season on ABC. After many years as an editor in sitcoms, then a Director in commercials, Bernie became a Director of Post Production at Lorimar in the mid 80’s, leading the transition from film to electronic post production at the first major production company to take a corporate conversion to the new technology. While there, he pioneered many state of the art post production techniques used today including the use of electronic non linear systems for editing, computer graphics for special effects and 16mm and 3 perf 35mm for film and television production.

Bernie was a consultant to Lucasfilm’s Droidworks in the creation of Editdroid, the first non linear editing system editing system used for dramatic television post production, and Convergence Corp., creators of the breakthrough editing system for electronic news. Priot to his work at Lorimar, Bernie owned and operated this own commercial production service, Milestone, one of the pioneering visual effects companies used by clients such as IBM and ATT. While there, Bernie created advertising campaigns for ABC Network, OnTv, Ford, Mazda, Califonia Raisins, and California Milk Advisory Board. Bernie teaches Post Production for Film & Television at UCLA Extension and has been a guest lecturer at USC, Cal Arts and Santa Monica College . He is currently working on preparing his course for UCLA’s Online studies. Bernie is a member of The Producer’s Guild, Director’s Guild, Editor’s Guild, and The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). He has recently collaborated on a textbook for Allyn & Bacon “Creative Post Production”.

David Lipsey

Alex MacDowell

Bio: Alex McDowell is a feature film production designer whose look is total, textured, and a strange-beautiful mix of realism, fine art and the insane. He designed Minority Report for Steven Spielberg. Fight Club for David Fincher. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for Terry Gilliam. He designed The Crow, The Crow: City Of Angels , Affair of the Necklace and Lawnmover Man. Currently, he is designing The Cat in the Hat. Before tackling feature films in the nineties, McDowell studied painting at the Central School of Art in London , designed punk rock album covers in the late seventies, and music videos and commercials in the eighties with directors like Fincher, Tarsem and Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Married and a father of two, he’s building a tree house in his spare time.

 

Bruce Markoe

Bio: Mr. Markoe oversees all aspects of budgeting, post production and use of new technologies as they pertain to feature production and post. Cliff's unique blend of research and Internet product development experience are invaluable to the strong science component and extensive Internet product capabilities that Digital Fountain has to offer. Tom Ohanian

Bio:  Tom Ohanian is an Academy Award® and two-time Emmy® award winner for his inventions of the Avid Media, Film, and Multicamera systems prior to joining DMOD. Bio:Charlie is a senior business executive specializing in networking and communications and has held the positions of president and chief executive officer, Aptiva/VivaSmart, which was acquired by Yahoo!; chief operating officer, Oneworld Systems Inc.; and senior vice president and general manager, products division, Global Village Communication. At Oneworld Systems, Charlie conceptualized and developed a unique new wide area networking product family providing integrated access devices.

 

Dave Pederson

Bio: David Pederson joined Zoran Corporation in January 2003 as Vice President Strategic Technologies, where he is responsible for product definition, platform technology, third-party development, and driving new industry initiatives. Prior to joining Zoran, Pederson served as Director of National Semiconductor’s Set-top Box Business Unit, having joined National Semiconductor in 1986 as a Field Applications Engineer specializing in microcontrollers and microprocessors. In 1995, he moved to Santa Clara to become the Worldwide Applications Manager of the Personal Systems Group and was promoted to head the Set-top Box activity in 1998. Prior to joining National, he was employed by Teledyne Avionics designing medial and aircraft instrumentation. Colin Ritchie

Bio:  Founder Colin Ritchie has worked within the entertainment industry for over 20 years. His career has taken him around the globe many times working with the world’s most advanced post-production companies, broadcasters and manufacturers.  In the early nineties Ritchie focused his attentions on the burgeoning business of digital effects in the motion picture industry, joining Eastman Kodak’s Cineon team. Working with a new breed of post-production company, Ritchie began the deployment of digital film technology in the United States and Europe. Joining Quantel’s film division in 1994, Ritchie continued the deployment of high performance hardware working with the visual effects’ teams on Stargate, Independence Day and Lost in Space. From there he continued his relationship within the visual effects industry by working on some of the early previsualization technology, and worked closely with visual effects companies developing higher performance platforms.  For the past four years Ritchie has worked and consulted with entertainment companies within the interactive television arena, as well as global connectivity for digital dailies. Most recently Ritchie was at 5D where he, and the 5D team, promoted a ground breaking graphics workstation, and introduced the Colossus digital intermediate color corrector. Ritchie has gained considerable knowledge of the digital intermediate process, working with companies such as Sony Imageworks and assisting them to complete projects, such as Stuart Little II.  Founding Aarmadillo in October 2002, Ritchie continues his focus on the post-production film and TV industry. Aarmadillo is a unique resource for both post-production companies, and manufacturers with software and hardware targeted towards these premier clients.  Ritchie is a member of the Visual Effects Society & The British Academy of Film & Television Arts.

 

Dana Ross

Bio:Dana Ross is the general manager and vice president of Technique, Technicolor's Digital Intermediate facility in Burbank. Ross joined Technicolor in 2001 after 23 years at CFI. At CFI, Ross served as color-timer to director Steven Soderbergh on "Ocean's Eleven," "Traffic," "Erin Brockovich," and "The Limey." His other recent credits include Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums," Andrew Davis' "Collateral Damage," Andrew Niccol's upcoming "Simone," "Ammores Perros," and Sofia Coppola's "Virgin Suicides."

 

Steve Schklair

Founder and Principal, Cobalt Entertainment

 
Bio:With over 20 years experience as an innovative leader of new technology ventures, Steve Schklair has a track record of financial and creative success that includes 3D films, location-based entertainment, high-definition television, CD-ROMs, and digital film production. His current company, Cobalt Entertainment, is a market-leading provider of 3D digital production services and proprietary technology to the film, computer, and broadcast television industries. It’s current clients and development partners include NFL Films, Ideal Entertainment, and Dreamworks. Immediately preceding his involvement with Cobalt, Schklair merged the multimedia content company he founded, Quantum Arts, with an Internet technology company, became the combined company’s CEO, and played an instrumental role in taking the company public. Prior to Quantum Arts, Schklair served as VP/General Manager of New Media for Digital Domain, the special effects studio responsible for films such as Apollo 13, The Fifth Element, Titanic and T2:3D. At Digital Domain and prior to his work there, at R/GA Digital Studios as Executive Producer and Creative Director, Schklair provided his creative vision to corporate clients such as Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, IBM, AT&T, Landmark Entertainment, Toyota, Philips, Levi’s, Sony, and Electronic Arts.  Schklair has recently been invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Advanced Imaging Committee.

 

Leon Silverman, Executive Vice President, LaserPacific Media Corporation  
Bio: Leon Silverman has helped introduce new technology to Hollywood for over twenty five years. Silverman is a founder and current President of the Hollywood Post Alliance. He is aslo a Manager of the Hollywood section of SMPTE, where he chairs its Education Committee. He serves on the Board of the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California and is also a member of its Technical Advisory Board.

 

Emile Edwin Smith

Bio: Currently a CG supervisor at Zoic Studios in Culver City , California working on the Joss Whedon show Firefly, Emile Edwin Smith has worked in the past as a Visual Effects Supervisor and Director with such facilities as Foundation Imaging, Radium and Neo Pictures. Recently Emile served as Digital Effects Supervisor on the Emmy nominated TV movie Superfire , after spending several months in New Zealand as Visual Effects Supervisor for on Extreme Team, a television pilot for Touchstone Pictures. He has worked on several Star Trek series, the feature films Mimic 2 and The Jackal, numerous commercials and music videos and directed several episodes of Starship Troopers: the Roughneck Chronicles. Emile graduated with his BA in Visual Arts from the University of California at San Diego and lives in Sierra Madre, California.

 

Michael Stroud
Business Journalist, iHollywood Forum CEO and Founder, Event Chair
 
Bio: Michael has been a professional business journalist for 20 years, is the co-founder of iHollywood Forum, and a frequent moderator for Internet business forums on digital entertainment in Los Angeles, San Francisco and NY including NAB, Internet World, CTIA, Telematics Update, Digital Living Room, Digital Hollywood, MB5 and eTV World. He previously covered technology as a senior writer at Investor's Business Daily, then became the Los Angeles Bloomberg News entertainment correspondent for five years, and later served as the Los Angeles Bureau Chief for Broadcasting and Cable. He works as an independent journalist covering technology, entertainment and the wireless industry for business magazines, and is a regular contributing writer covering entertainment and technology for Wired.com. His articles have also appeared in the Sunday New York Times, Business 2.0, and The Red Herring. He has a B.A. from UC Berkeley in Asian Studies in 1981, and speaks fluent Mandarin. He also conducts media trainings for European and Asian technology companies.

 

Dave Trescot

Director of the Dynamic Media Group, Adobe Systems, Inc.

 
Bio: David Trescot is currently the Director of Dynamic Media at Adobe and has overall responsibility for both the Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects product lines. Upon his arrival at the company, Dave was Group Product Marketing Manager for the Dynamic Media Group. He has an extensive background in digital video and animation, and has held a variety of engineering, sales, and marketing positions. Prior to joining Adobe, he worked at the Alias|Wavefront division of Silicon Graphics as the product manager for the world's leading 3D animation tool -- PowerAnimator. Previous positions in the computer industry included being the Director of Sales and Marketing at Specular International (creators of the Infini-D animation product) and as an engineer and product manager for Yarc Systems (makers of high-speed RISC accelerator cards). He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida.  

 

Martin Vann
VP Worldwide Sales & Marketing, Discreet

 
Bio: Martin leads worldwide sales and marketing activities for Discreet overseeing customer needs for sales and support of the company's award-winning products in visual effects, editing and finishing, infrastructure, and 3D and animation solutions. Martin is an accomplished sales, marketing and operational leader. Prior to joining Discreet, he spent 18 months at DMOD, a Digital Rights Management company as VP of Sales and Business Development. In 2000, Martin joined iFilm as VP of Sales and Marketing. Prior to iFilm, Martin held various senior management positions at Avid Technology. While managing field operations for Avid's entertainment and broadcast sales, the company received both Emmy(tm) and Oscar(r) recognition. Martin began his career at IBM, holding multiple sales and marketing positions.

 

Stephen Wright

Technical Director, Cinesite

 
Bio: Steve Wright, Technical Director for Cinesite, is a veteran digitalimaging artist with over 16 years experience in 3D computer animation, digital compositing, and digital cel animation effects for feature films, broadcast television and commercials. His extensive production experience includes over 35 feature films and 50 broadcast commercials. Steve is an experienced speaker on digital imaging and visual effects, and is the author of the book "Digital Compositing for Film an Video". As the Technical

Director for Kodak's Cinesite for the last three years, Steve has specialized in solving digital imaging problems for Digital Mastering, Visual Effects, Scanning and Recording, and Digital Restoration departments.

 

Matthew White
Vice President, Film Library, National Geographic Television & Film

 
Bio: As vice president of the National Geographic Film Library, Matthew White runs the day-to-day operations of the film and video archiving and licensing division of National Geographic Television & Film (NGT&F). Under his direction, the Film Library markets its award-winning footage to advertisers, educators, scientists, entertainment producers, museum curators and corporate marketers for commercial use in advertising campaigns, television and film productions, museum exhibits, research projects, classroom/educational productions and corporate presentations. In 2002 and early 2003, White led a strategic alliance with Associated Press Television Network to syndicate the Film Library’s footage internationally, and developed relationships with Yahoo! and AOL to create a branded presence for National Geographic on their broadband services. In the past year, he has also formed reciprocal licensing agreements with the National Film Board of Canada and ABC Australia, among others.
